Business Continuity Planning Methodology
As with any methodology, BCP is referred to in several different terms ranging from Disaster Recovery to Crisis Management to Business Resumption. It is important to stress that BCP, regardless of what it is called, is more than just an IT or Data Processing issue.

BCP is a process that minimizes the impact upon an organization’s time-critical business processes given a significant disruptive event such as power outage, a natural disaster, accident, act of sabotage, or other such occurrence. The BCP process is intended to help organizations develop cost-effective approaches to ensuring continuity after an interruption of time-critical processes, supporting systems, facilities, and/or resources.
The Business Continuity Planning methodology emphasizes an approach beginning with identification of time-critical business processes and the infrastructure necessary to support those processes. Once identified, time-critical processes are mapped to the organization’s IT and other support resources, such as physical space, networks, office equipment, business partners / 3rd parties and people, necessary for recovery and restoration and a return to smooth running of these processes. (See Figure 1)
The BCP service line also includes assessing and improving the overall Crisis Management Planning (CMP) infrastructure of the client. CMP focuses on the development of an effective and efficient enterprise-wide emergency/disaster response capability. This response capability includes forming appropriate management teams and training their members in reacting to serious company emergency situations (i.e., hurricane, earthquake, flood, fire, serious hacker or virus damage, etc.).
