Energy Use Reduction
Reducing facility energy consumption provides attractive return on investment, and is key to an organization’s ability to meet their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (“carbon footprint”) reduction goals. It is critical that energy use reduction strategies are not only cost effective, but that they also maintain employee health and safety and do not create unwanted operational side effects. EORM can provide both overview and detailed energy audits for office, commercial, laboratory and industrial facilities to identify inefficient energy-consuming processes and equipment, and energy use patterns that can be improved. In an overview audit, we conduct a site walk-through to identify the most significant energy-consuming activities, equipment and processes based on our experience with a broad cross-section of business and industrial activities. After discussing energy use patterns with facilities and process representatives, we identify the top-priority opportunities for energy reduction, ranging from physical equipment modification to changes in usage patterns/behaviors.
Detailed audits include assessment of specific types of equipment against energy management benchmarks for:
- Office equipment and technology
- Facility design and layout
- Lighting systems
- HVAC systems
- Compressed air, steam, refrigeration, hydraulic and materials handling systems
- Fume hoods, pumps, fans, motors, drives, and other potentially significant energy-users
Recommendations for system improvement include consideration of employee health and safety and human factors (ergonomics).
As applicable, the scope of both the overview and detailed audits can include off-site activities within the company’s control, such as transportation via company fleets, and identification of alternative energies available to the site.
