EORM Priority Press April 2008

EORM's Priority Press newsletter provides up-to-date information about environmental, health, and safety (EHS), industry trends, and upcoming events.

Happy Earth Day!

Earth Day's message of environmental awareness is one that we share and support as a company. Last year, as part of our commitment to reducing waste and promoting good environmental practices, we gave each EORM employee reusable canvas shopping bags, so that we can reduce plastic and paper use when we’re out of the office as well. Many "EORMers" report that they use their canvas bags almost exclusively now, rather than getting more bags on each shopping trip.

This year, we are continuing the practice of phasing out one-use items by sending a stainless steel coffee mug to each EORM employee. Americans buy over 14 billion cups of coffee in paper cups each year – that’s a lot of needless waste. Stainless steel mugs are a more sustainable option to consider. You can help reduce paper waste each time you order your morning coffee.

Supporting recycling, reducing waste, and being conscious of our overall energy footprint are all ways that we can lead by example, both as a business and as individuals in our communities.  While we know there is always room for improvement, we are proud of our business practices and of the many ways that each EORM team member strives to embody these ideals in the office, at client sites, and at home. We encourage our clients and friends to take some time to consider other ways to make every day a little more Earth-friendly by supporting good environmental practices.

Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Regulatory Update

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is considering new initiatives regarding greenhouse gases and climate change.  Some of these actions are the direct results of states taking the EPA to court because of proposed federal changes to the Clean Air Act that many people feel weaken the existing regulations.

Department of Homeland Security
Chemical Facility Anti Terrorism (CFAT) Program Update

The federal Department of Homeland Security (DHS) anticipates issuing letters to facilities that filed Top Screen submittals by the end of April.  Facilities designated as High Risk will be given their initial Tier Ranking and a schedule to complete a Security Vulnerability Assessment (SVA).  The on-line SVA tool and guidance will be available through the DHS website.  Facilities designated as low risk -- most facilities that filed Top Screen -- will have no further filing obligations unless they exceed a screening threshold quantity (STQ) for an additional chemical of interest, in which case they will be required to file a new Top Screen.

Once the SVA tool and guidance are issued, EORM and our security partner will be offering additional guidance on how to proceed.

Contact a local EORM office or call 800.648.1506 if we can answer any questions about this requirement.
